it was to do with the cookies we set, to keep track of the session. i was setting the samesite attribute (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Headers/Set-Cookie/SameSite) to None, and chrome wasn't liking it.

chrome handles it slightly differently to firefox it seems.

i need to dig a bit more into it, but it's working for now.
