Is there a way to include the variable descriptions, such as "This is the dependent variable.", in any sort of exported file.

.omv files and .sav files will save the description (and recover them when opening).

Thanks. I'm seeing that a .sav file will sometimes work (but only if the jamovi variable-names happen to obey SPSS variable-naming rules; otherwise exporting produces an error: "a provided name contains an illegal character.")

i think this is improved in the latest version of readstat, and so you should see an improvement in our next release.

Note: Using jamovi to export data as csv is a little more problematic than I thought (and also this export-as-SPSS issue still hasn't been fixed). However, using write.csv in Rj seems to work as a work-around for exporting as csv. See https://github.com/jamovi/jamovi/issues/1356
