Interpretation biserial rank correlation as effect size

If I have understood correctly, the Mann-Whitney U test outputs the biserial rank correlation according to Wendt (1972). The value range is between 0 and 1. How is this to be interpreted as an effect size? Unfortunately, I have not been able to find any papers on this (alos small effect, medium effect, etc.). Thank you very much for your help
