I'm just curious about the term "3rd generation statistical spreadsheet". What would you consider to be the first and second generation?

first generation = command line based
second generation = a UI which generates commands
third generation = where the UI and options become *stateful* and interactive - i.e. you can click on an analysis, and up pops the options for it, and you can go on to make changes, etc.
