jamovi and jasp

Post by vinschger »

As far as I have understood jamovi is an open-source statistical software with a user-friendly interface, originally forked from JASP, but developed with a stronger focus on classical (frequentist) statistics and modular extensibility, whereas JASP emphasizes Bayesian methods and follows a more curated design. This raises the question: To what extent are the two programs compatible with each other—particularly since both are based on R? For example, is it possible to exchange datasets (including variable labels and data types) between jamovi and JASP? And beyond that, is there any way to share analysis files (e.g., a .omv file from jamovi) with JASP users, or vice versa, so that results can be reviewed or continued across platforms?

hey,

no, jamovi wasn't forked from jasp ... it's a clean-room implementation. the two look similar, because they both were (initially at least) designed by the same people.

there's not very good compatibility between the two though. the exchange of data sets with variable labels and data types between the two is (somewhat ironically?) best handled by saving files in the spss .sav file format.

analyses/results are not interchangeable between the two.

Dear Jonathon,
Thank you so much for your interesting clarification of Jamovi’s origin.
I wasn't aware of the SPSS option for the intercompatibility of datasets and labels between Jamovi and JASP. Thank you for the hint.
Best wishes,
Vinschger
